Keeping Green and Tidy

Posted by Anna Lyon on

What have all you lovely people been up to this week?
Well if you are anything like us you will have been wondering whether to brace the elements and get wet and cold or to keep them holed up in the house for long periods. As a consequence it is a constant battle keeping them entertained and keeping all our Grimm's and other toys in anything nearing an orderly fashion.
 Green and Tidy
What do you to keep tidy? Here at Little Earth Farm HQ we are like most of you and have hectic lives. A couple of years ago we began stocking ReSpiin jute and seagrass baskets and bowls and just had to test them out. From the first basket, our collection has now grown to 5 or 6 and we make very good use of them every day. When we 'tidy' we throw all of our bits and bobs into our ReSpiin; buttons, balls, people, jewels, the lot. Job done.

Available in a variety of colour-schemes, our favourites of the Respiin range are the Mini-Bowl Sets. We currently stock 'Ocean', which we use, pictured below, plus Denim, Grey/White and Natural all in Jute. We also have a natural Seagrass version.

Green Small Bowl - 55g and 5.5cm x 11 cm dia. approx
Aqua Medium Bowl - 75g and 6cm x 13.5 cm dia. approx
Navy Blue Large Bowl - 105g and 6.5cm x 16 cm dia. approx

What exactly are Jute and Seagrass?

Both Jute and Seagrass are a fantastic natural and eco-friendly resource

Jute plants are easy to grow, have a high yield per acre and, unlike cotton, have little need for pesticides and fertilisers. Jute grows during the rainy season in Bangladesh which is from June to October. The fibres lie beneath the bark around the woody core. To extract the fibre, the jute bundles are submersed in water and left for a few days until the fibres come loose and are ready for stripping from the stalk, then washed and dried. Jute plants help to clean the air. During growth they take in three times more CO2 than the average tree, converting this CO2 into oxygen. Jute is 100% biodegradable.

Seagrass is a renewable, sustainable and biodegradable material. Seagrasses grow very quickly in shallow saltwater along coastlines and rivers. Once mature the grasses are cut by hand and dried in the sun, then hand twisted and woven.

For larger storage we also use the standard Baskets and Bowls range, namely the Seagrass and Jute 'Fruit Basket' - great for light items such as the Grimms Large buttons, Holztiger or Ostheimer wooden animals and more.

For small but heavier items we use the Jute Bowl in Medium as it is sturdier than its Seagrass alternatives.
